Gut feeling, a sixth sense, a women’s intuition – people define the inner gut feeling in different ways. It doesn’t come from the conscious mind, it often seems irrational and we don’t always know or want to trust it. Intuition can speak to us in many ways. Suddenly we have a strong calling towards a decision, a deep feeling or a clear thought, and sometimes it’s an image that will appear in our dreams.

What is intuition?
For some, intuition seems like a magical power, but in reality it is simply the ability to solve problems or obtain information stored in our subconscious mind. Throughout our lives, we gather many experiences, yet we don’t always analyze all of them consciously. Our senses work at full capacity and encode various situations and information, and these combined together can help guide us with an answer that comes straight from our subconscious.
How much should we really depend on our intuition? As Agata Sobków from the SWPS Branch in Wrocław says: “Intuition gives us a hint, but it is not always the optimal solution. It is best if we consider it in a rational way. Intuition is based on generalized patterns that we know from our past. And the new situation we find ourselves in does not have to fit into the patterns we already know.” Of course, intuition doesn’t always present itself to us as clear information. Sometimes we have to learn to understand our own intuition and inner feelings. Get to know this subtle language and see if you can trust it.
How to distinguish intuition from fear?
Many people who are trying to get in touch with their intuition wonder how to distinguish the whispers of the subconscious mind from fear or wishful thinking. Intuition usually comes as a glimpse, mostly uninvited. It’s an inner knowing that often comes quite suddenly. To recognize your intuition you need to be able to truly listen to yourself, pay attention to your inner feelings & thoughts. Just like when you want to hear your own voice, you must first learn to distinguish it from that of your inner critic or a toxic parent. What can disturb the ability to hear your intuition is a very emotional approach. When you are internally focused on a specific answer, for example in love or you are obsessed with something like fearing a car accident, it will be easy for you to consider your projections as the voice of intuition, but the whispers of intuition are just what they are – they are not emotional. They are not wishful thinking, nor a fixation on a given topic.
Practices that strengthen your intuition.
Do you want to hear the voice of intuition clearer? You probably won’t be surprised with our suggestion – to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness + time = self-awareness, and this is needed to allow ourselves not only to listen, but also to better interpret the information coming to us from our subconscious.
Listen to your body.
Listen to your inner self. Literally.
Believe it or not, your digestive system can help improve your intuition. There are neurotransmitters in your gut, so if you have a strong feeling about something, it’s not something to ignore. Strengthen this aspect of your intuition by listening to the signals from your body when you need to make a decision. It is relatively easy to find out what you are feeling and what you need before your conscious mind rationalizes the situation. It can be a job interview, a date, seeing your family. Try to have an open mind while scanning your body to find out what it feels like. Does your belly tighten into a knot? Or are you feeling weary and can’t stop yawning? Is it just stress, which is normal for the situation you’re in, or is it an unusual physical reaction? Is your chest open or are you unconsciously closing it by crossing your arms? Sometimes we want to make decisions with our mind, while our body already knows what the right thing to do is, and informs us of it with a physical reaction. You don’t have to listen to your inner voice right away if you don’t trust it yet. Write down these body sensations and the situations in which they occur, and then check in again after some time to see whether the decision made in contradiction to them was the right one for you.
Journaling is a great way to become aware of thoughts and feelings. You can write down your bodily sensations, dreams, but also insights from meditation. Letting yourself write down all the thoughts that come to your mind without making sure they form proper sentences or make sense to anyone else can draw interesting information from your subconscious. Try it, and you may be surprised to see what comes up.
What do I need to know today?
Another way to strengthen your intuition is through meditation. Sitting in silence with your own mind often brings beautiful gifts. You can meditate while sitting down, but also running, walking or even dancing. There are different ways to meditate and it’s beneficial to try a couple of them to see which works best for you in a given moment. Before meditating, ask yourself: what do I need to know today? – and let the answer come to you. If nothing comes up, that’s fine too. Practice daily, and over time you will be able to get more and more information from within. If you are not meditating, you can just ask yourself this question while still in bed, before setting off and starting your busy day, or before going to sleep, as dreams can very bluntly show us what is hidden in our unconscious.
Whichever method you choose, don’t get discouraged and keep up your practice, and you will see the results show up over time. When listening to our inner voice and following the guidance of our intuition, we can understand & experience ourselves more fully.
