Why you shouldn’t set New Year’s resolutions

Before you go ahead and set your 2020 resolutions – here’s a better idea: set intentions instead. Creating mindful routines & rituals that improve your well-being will have a far better effect than setting a goal you forget about by February. Keep reading to discover why this year you should explore new intentions, not resolutions.

Let’s face it, resolutions are not that great. They are usually unrealistic or significantly more unattainable than their makers believe.

A common issue with creating New Year’s resolutions is that it usually ends up becoming a list of external aspirations.

Many of our resolutions come from the feeling of not being good enough or not having enough. We think of what we don’t have, and then we set goals to be different, to become better.

Not the best start to a new year, is it?

That’s why this year, we’re leaving resolutions behind and turning to intention-setting instead. 

A Mindful Guide to New Year’s Intention setting


Before you sit down to write down all your new resolutions, take some time out. Spend time reflecting on the past year and what came with it.

Below are 3 questions to ask yourself and reflect on:

1. What am I proud of from last year?

2. What am I ready to let go of from last year?

3. What do I want to manifest in the New Year?


The 3 most common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, spend less money, and become more organized. And most people set the same resolutions all over again year after year.

Resolutions set us up to fail. They make us believe that if you can just lose some weight or get that promotion at work — your life will become better. But will it? These goals rely on external factors that we have rather limited control over.

Instead, let’s focus on setting intentions.


Focus on the process, not the results.

Resolutions like “lose weight” and “get organized” are solely focused on the result, with no idea of a process for how to actually get there.

New routines and rituals start with setting an intention, and these intentions lead to action. With today’s busy world focused on chasing the next goal, the importance of self-care tends to get lost in the process. When you just set a goal instead of really thinking about your true intention and purpose behind it, you cannot expect a positive result.

When setting new rituals and routines around them, you dedicate time to self-care, practice awareness and bring more balance to your life. Life is a journey, not a destination.


There are two concepts we’d like to introduce – Sankalpa and the Word of the Year.

So what is the “Word of the Year”? All you do is simply choose one word as your intention for the new year. You think of who and where you want to be in a year, put it in one word, and let that word guide you moving forward. You can choose words like happy, peaceful, determined, or breathe. The important thing is to know exactly what that word means to you and what’s your reason behind it.

On the other hand, Yoga Nidra offers a refreshing concept as an alternative to New Year’s resolutions: the practice of Sankalpa. A sankalpa practice starts from the premise that you already are who you need to be to fulfill your life’s dharma. All you need to do is focus your mind, connect to your deepest desires, and acknowledge the energy within.

A sankalpa should honor the deeper meaning of our life. It speaks to the larger purpose of our lives, our dharma. The goal is for your chosen sankalpa to become a statement you can call upon to remind you of your true nature and guide you in your choices.

Put your sankalpa positively, in the present tense, clearly, and concisely. Sample Sankalpas:“I am trusting”, “I have abundance”, “I embrace all of who I am”. The key is to stay with your Sankalpa until it becomes a reality and becomes a part of who you are. Consistency counts.


Last but not least – let go of the pressure.

Make the next year the year that you become kinder to yourself and more in tune with who you truly are.
